A

Aluminium Joinery
Aluminium exterior windows and doors.

Autoclaving
The production of a stable, protective oxide on steel parts by treatment in a pressurised, high temperature steam containing atmosphere.

B

Bottom plate
Also called a sole plate, this is the board on which the bottoms of the wall framing studs stand.

C

Ceramic
Any of various hard, brittle, heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials made by shaping and then firing a nonmetallic mineral, such as clay, at a high temperature.

Cladding
A protective or insulating layer fixed to the outside of a building or another structure.

Colorsteel®
A roofing product where paint is applied to the steel base and oven baked providing a very durable and long lasting protection for the metal coating even when exposed for many years. Oven baked paints last longer than most post painted systems. Colorsteel® roofing is flexible in the design of the roof - it can be curved, have steep pitches and or strong straight lines.

D

E

F

Fibreglass
A material consisting of extremely fine glass fibres, used in making various products, such as yarns, fabrics, insulators, and structural objects or parts. Also called spun glass.

Flyscreen
Woven mesh of metal, plastic, or fiberglass stretched over a window opening to permit air to pass through, but not insects.

Fungicide
A chemical substance that destroys or inhibits the growth of fungi.

G

Galvanisation
A process, available from the mid 1800's (first patented in 1837), where iron is coated with zinc to protect it from rusting, e.g., galvanised roofing nails.

H

HardieFlex®
A sheet material manufactured from fibre cement which is a composition of treated cellulose fibre, cement, finely ground sand and water. Following forming into sheets the product is cured by high-pressure steam autoclaving. Used as the exterior cladding to timber and steel framing whilst also being the exterior bracing system (for timber frame only) when jointed and coated.

Hob top
Cooking mechanism set into the bench.

I

Iron (Fe)
The 26th element on the periodic table. A silvery-white, lustrous, malleable, ductile, magnetic or magnetizable, metallic element occurring abundantly in combined forms, notably in hematite, limonite, magnetite, and taconite, and used alloyed in a wide range of important structural materials.

Insecticide
A chemical substance used to kill insects.

J

K

L

Level
Something relatively flat and even.

O

P

Particleboard
A structural material made of wood fragments, such as chips or shavings, that are mechanically pressed into sheet form and bonded together with resin.

Pergola
An arbor or a passageway of columns supporting a roof of trelliswork on which climbing plants are trained to grow.

Piles
A heavy beam of timber, concrete, or steel, driven or set into the earth as a foundation or support for a structure.

Plywood
Wood made of three or more layers of veneer joined with glue, usually laid with the grain of adjoining plies at right angles to one another. This arrangement makes plywood strong and highly resistant to movement from expansion and contraction. This lack of cracking keeps paint and finishing problems to a minimum. Plywood has innumerable uses, from roof decking to siding and cabinets.

Q

R

Range hood
A shield installed over a cooktop using a fan to vent cooking vapors out of the room through installed ductwork or to filter the air.

S

Stainless Steel
Any of various steels alloyed with at least 10 percent chromium and sometimes containing other elements and that are resistant to corrosion or rusting associated with exposure to water and moist air.

Steel
A generally hard, strong, durable, malleable alloy of iron and carbon, usually containing between 0.2 and 1.5 percent carbon, often with other constituents such as manganese, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, copper, tungsten, cobalt, or silicon, depending on the desired alloy properties, and widely used as a structural material.

Steel-Framing
Steel frames are high strength, dry-rot/rodent/termite/borer proof and also will not shrink, warp, split or rot.

Studs
Upright pieces of lumber or steel in a wall to which coverings such as drywall, siding or other types of panels are attached.

T

Tanalised timber
Wood which has been vacuum-pressure impregnated with Tanalith® to protect against rot from moisture. Timber can be tanalised to withstand different degrees of moisture exposure.

Tanalith®
A specially formulated fungicidal and insecticidal water-based preservative.

U

V

Verandah (Veranda)
A porch or balcony, usually roofed and often partly enclosed, extending along the outside of a building.

W

Working drawings
Complete set of drawings needed to construct your home (i.e., elevations, floor plans, details etc)
